Get answers to common questions about contractor bonding requirements, costs, and processes for Washington construction professionals.
Yes. Washington requires every contractor to register with L&I and post a surety bond before performing any construction work. This applies statewide to general contractors, specialty contractors, and subcontractors. There is no exemption for small jobs.
General contractors must post a $30,000 surety bond. Specialty contractors post a $12,000 bond. These amounts are set by state law. You do not pay the full bond amount. You pay an annual premium that is a percentage of it based on your credit.
A general contractor registration covers contractors who supervise or manage entire construction projects. A specialty contractor registration covers those who work in a specific trade. The bond amount is $30,000 for general and $12,000 for specialty. Your registration type must match the scope of work you perform.
Yes. Washington's public works bond law requires payment and performance bonds on public construction contracts. The payment bond shields subs and suppliers; the performance bond guarantees completion.
The cost is an annual premium, a fraction of the bond's size. Strong credit earns the lowest percentage.
Quickly, often the same day. The application is short and standard amounts go out right away.
Yes. A higher percentage covers the added risk, and applicants rebuilding after liens or bankruptcy are routinely bonded.
Electrical contractors are licensed separately through L&I under the electrical program and carry their own bond and insurance requirements. This is in addition to the general contractor registration if the electrical contractor also performs general contracting work.
The L&I registration bond satisfies the statewide contractor registration requirement and stays in force continuously. A bid bond is project specific and guarantees you will honor your bid and post the required performance and payment bonds if you win the work.
Most Washington bonds run a year and renew with the license. A reminder comes ahead of expiration to prevent a gap.
Two different things. The bond answers to your clients and the public; insurance answers to you. Washington layers workers' compensation on as well.
You can work here. Secure the Washington license or local registration and we match a bond to it.
