Get answers to common questions about contractor bonding requirements, costs, and processes for Oregon construction professionals.
Yes. The CCB requires every licensed contractor to carry a surety bond before performing any construction work in Oregon. This applies statewide to residential, commercial, and specialty contractors, and to subcontractors. There is no exemption for small jobs.
Bond amounts are set by the CCB and depend on your license type. Residential general contractors, commercial general contractors, and specialty contractors each carry different amounts. You do not pay the full bond amount. You pay an annual premium that is a percentage of it based on your credit.
The CCB issues licenses for residential general contractors, commercial general contractors, residential specialty contractors, commercial specialty contractors, and residential and commercial developers. Each type has its own bond amount and scope of work.
Public jobs are bonded. Oregon's public contracting law ties payment and performance bonds to government contracts on public construction contracts.
Cost is a yearly cut of the bond amount, set by your credit and the size of the bond.
Fast, usually same-day after a quick form, so you can finish registering without waiting.

Yes. Electrical contractors are licensed through the Oregon Building Codes Division, and plumbing contractors through the Oregon Plumbing Board. Each carries its own bonding or insurance requirements separate from the CCB license.
The CCB bond satisfies the statewide contractor licensing requirement and stays in force continuously. A bid bond is project specific and guarantees you will honor your bid and post the required performance and payment bonds if you win the work.
They renew yearly in most cases. Your surety bills the renewal before the term ends so nothing lapses.
They serve opposite sides. A bond shields the people you work for; insurance shields your firm. Oregon requires workers' compensation separately.
Yes. Register where Oregon requires it and we place a bond sized to that license or local rule so you can start.
