Every licensed contractor in California works under the Contractors State License Board (CSLB), one of the most structured licensing systems in the country. The CSLB issues Class A general engineering, Class B general building, Class B-2 residential remodeling, and more than forty Class C specialty classifications, and it ties every active license to a contractor license bond. As of January 1, 2023 that bond amount is 25,000 dollars, up from the previous 15,000 dollars, and you cannot keep an active license without it.

The license bond is only the starting point in California. Contractors who form an LLC must also carry a separate 100,000 dollar LLC employee and worker bond. A license that lists a Responsible Managing Officer or Responsible Managing Employee as its qualifier needs a 25,000 dollar bond of qualifying individual. Contractors rebuilding after a disciplinary action may be required to file a disciplinary bond. On top of all that, California public works under Caltrans and local agencies require bid, performance, and payment bonds.

On the public side, California's Little Miller Act sets the surety rules for public work on public construction contracts, and state transportation work through Caltrans is bonded as well. We keep California bonding simple, with same-day issuance on routine limits.

Frequently Asked Questions About California Contractor Bonds

Get answers to common questions about contractor bonding requirements, costs, and processes for California construction professionals.

Do I need a contractor bond in California?

Yes. The CSLB requires a 25,000 dollar contractor license bond for every active license, and you generally need a license for any job of 500 dollars or more in combined labor and materials. The bond must stay in place continuously for your license to remain active.

How much is the California contractor license bond?

The amount filed with the CSLB is 25,000 dollars, but you do not pay that figure. You pay an annual premium that is a small percentage of it based on your credit, and many California contractors with good credit pay a low yearly rate.

Do California LLCs need an additional bond?

Yes. A contractor licensed as an LLC must carry a separate 100,000 dollar employee and worker bond on top of the standard 25,000 dollar license bond. We can place both at the same time.

What is a bond of qualifying individual in California?

When a Responsible Managing Officer or Responsible Managing Employee qualifies the license instead of the owner, the CSLB requires an additional 25,000 dollar bond of qualifying individual along with the contractor license bond.

How fast can I get my CSLB bond?

Quickly, often the same day. The application is short and standard amounts go out right away.

Can I get a California contractor bond with bad credit?

In most cases yes. Rough credit shifts you to a market that charges more, so even a recent bankruptcy is not a hard stop.

What is the difference between a license bond and a bid bond in California?

License bonds back your standing and stay in force with the license. Bid bonds are job-specific, promising you stand by your bid and furnish the project bonds if you win.

Does California require performance and payment bonds on public jobs?

Yes. California's Little Miller Act requires payment and performance bonds on public construction contracts. The payment bond shields subs and suppliers; the performance bond guarantees completion.

How do I renew my California contractor bond?

Most California bonds run a year and renew with the license. A reminder comes ahead of expiration to prevent a gap.

Are California contractor bonds the same as insurance?

They serve opposite sides. A bond shields the people you work for; insurance shields your firm. California requires workers' compensation separately.

Can out-of-state contractors get bonded in California?

You can work here. Secure the California license or local registration and we match a bond to it.
